Chaye's Journey

Often described as a modern-day tastemaker in the spirit of B. Smith, Chaye has redefined hospitality not as service, but as a feeling. Her influence extends well beyond her walls. As Musical Director for the Richland County Parks and Recreation Foundation’s Jazz Fest, she curates large-scale celebrations that honor the legacy and future of jazz and soul.

Her contributions to arts, culture, and community earned her the Pillar of the Community Award, recognizing the depth and reach of her impact.

She also serves on the board of the South Carolina Jazz Foundation and is the visionary behind West Columbia’s Meeting Street Music Fest, helping to cultivate a vibrant, enduring music culture.

Her work embodies the Sophisti-Soul philosophy: Curated Moments. Soulful Sounds. Elevated Experiences.

Before she became the woman you know today, there was a journey that shaped her voice, her vision, and her purpose.

A Musical Beginning: A Mother’s Influence

Chaye Alexander’s lifelong passion for music was sparked by her mother’s love for timeless sounds. Growing up in Brooklyn, NY, Chaye fondly remembers how her home was filled with the voices of Dionne Warwick, Petula Clark, The Beatles, Brook Benton, and a host of other soul and pop legends. Her bond with music was forged the moment she was asked to change a record on the family turntable.

The magic of hearing the needle touch the vinyl was transformative, solidifying her connection to music. It wasn’t long before Chaye began building her own collection of 45s and 12-inch records, spending her earnings on the latest albums and immersing herself in the vibrant musical landscape of her youth.

As a teenager, Chaye spent countless hours DJing alongside her brother at various events. This chapter taught her one of her most essential lessons, how to design “the music to create the right atmosphere and mood for any space.” Eventually, Chaye took over the turntables, honing a unique style of blending genres. Her seamless mixes soon caught the attention of a local radio DJ, who invited her to become a regular on his show.

These early experiences helped Chaye develop her skills as a producer and on-air talent, setting the stage for a deep understanding of broadcasting that would later inform her ventures in media.

Beyond The Music: The Journey

Chaye’s dedication to music eventually led her to the recording industry, where she managed and developed emerging talent. Frustrated by the limited platforms available to promote new artists, she took matters into her own hands and launched Have U Heard, a television show that showcased rising stars and legendary artists.

Known for her signature ability to put guests at ease, Chaye’s interviews became celebrated for their depth and authenticity, revealing a more genuine side of each artist.

Have U Heard aired for three successful seasons, syndicated across 13 U.S. cities. With each episode, Chaye demonstrated her gift for connecting with audiences, not just through facts, but through meaningful, insightful conversations that resonated. Her success on the show helped establish her reputation as a trusted voice in music and media.

A Legacy in Music & Culture

Rooted in decades of music, media, and culture, Chaye Alexander is the experience curator and creative visionary behind Chayz Lounge and Chayz Lounge Radio, a 24/7 global streaming station blending smooth jazz with soulful sophistication.

The concept began in 2004 as a vision for a virtual space where legendary grooves and fresh discoveries could exist in harmony. In 2009, that vision became reality with the launch of the online station, quickly attracting listeners around the world who were drawn to its curated, refined sound.

As the station grew, so did the dream of bringing that atmosphere into a physical space. In 2017, Chaye brought that vision to life with the opening of Chayz Lounge, an intimate boutique listening room where live jazz, dining, and curated experiences unfold in an elevated, unhurried setting.

Chayz Lounge Band

In 2019, she relocated the Lounge to its current home at 607 Meeting Street in West Columbia's River District, where the atmosphere she envisioned in 2004 finally found its permanent address.

The name itself carries a dual meaning, a personal extension of Chaye Alexander, and a nod to the chaise lounge, a place designed for comfort, relaxation, and ease. Inspired by the elegance once embodied by B. Smith, Chayz Lounge stands as a modern salon where culture and refinement meet with intention.

Over the years, Chaye has presented many notable names in jazz and soul at Chayz Lounge and beyond. As one acclaimed artist shared:

“I so enjoyed performing at Chayz Lounge in West Columbia, SC. Chaye is wonderful. The staff and venue create a warm, family vibe. The audience was engaged and the house band was on point. I look forward to returning.” — Nils, Renowned Jazz Guitarist
